Russula mushrooms are as common in the summertime as mosquitos, and like many mushroom groups, some in the Russula category are edible and some are not. Additionally, they have white gills (ordinarily) and they share this characteristic with some very dangerous varieties. However, the Russulas usually have very colorful caps that set them apart. This edible Russula species, known as the Green-Quilted Russula (Russula parvovirescens), has lovely ornamentation like a stained glass window, or the pattern on a quilt, which can be quite striking.
