{"id":259,"date":"2016-04-06T13:27:01","date_gmt":"2016-04-06T13:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/?p=259"},"modified":"2018-03-11T20:20:30","modified_gmt":"2018-03-11T20:20:30","slug":"article-in-ecori-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/index.php\/2016\/04\/06\/article-in-ecori-news\/","title":{"rendered":"Article in EcoRI News"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"block-f84b62b86f2403072e93\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\" data-block-type=\"2\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<p><strong>Rhode Island couple balances eating their finds with environmental advocacy<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>By FRANK CARINI\/ecoRI News staff<\/h3>\n<p>When it comes to mushrooms, Ryan Bouchard and Emily Schmidt are much more than \u201cbelly hunters.\u201d Sure, the 130 types of wild mushrooms the Wakefield, R.I., couple has cooked with were all delicious, but they consider southern New England\u2019s population of umbrella-shaped fungi more than culinary enhancers.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-260 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MushroomHunters1.jpg\" alt=\"MushroomHunters1\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MushroomHunters1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MushroomHunters1-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MushroomHunters1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MushroomHunters1-678x509.jpg 678w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MushroomHunters1-326x245.jpg 326w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/MushroomHunters1-80x60.jpg 80w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>They didn\u2019t create their start-up enterprise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Southern-New-England-Mushroom-Hunting\/657591177628706\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern New England Mushroom Hunting<\/a>, or publish a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Gourmet-Mushrooms-of-RI-calendarbook\/420809931307370?sk=timeline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">book\/2015 calendar<\/a> titled \u201cGourmet Mushrooms of Rhode Island\u201d to rid the region of edible fungi. In fact, they are more concerned with educating people about the species\u2019 role as pollution filters and ecosystem builders.<\/p>\n<p>They deliver this mushroom message by focusing on their deliciousness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWild mushroom flavors are indescribable. They make an awesome meal,\u201d Bouchard said. \u201cBut what impact does hunting mushrooms have on the environment? We don\u2019t want to promote the disturbance of nature.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"block-yui_3_17_2_1_1422019507730_53126\" class=\"sqs-block html-block sqs-block-html\" data-block-type=\"2\">\n<div class=\"sqs-block-content\">\n<p>That\u2019s why Schmidt, besides focusing on the nutritional value and health benefits of mushrooms, spends plenty of time studying the species\u2019 ecological importance, most notably as a means to degrade contaminants. She is intrigued by mycoremediation \u2014 a form of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/tio\/download\/citizens\/a_citizens_guide_to_bioremediation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bioremediation<\/a>, the process of using fungi to deconstruct environmental contaminants. Some fungi are capable of absorbing and concentrating heavy metals in the mushroom fruit bodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether a mushroom is edible or not, they can help save the planet,\u201d Schmidt said. \u201cThe world of mushrooms is endless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bouchard and Schmidt got much of their passion for and interest in mushrooms from the Audubon Society of Rhode Island\u2019s Joe Metzen and fellow Rhode Islander Josh Hutchins, who has studied the species in Maine. They also ascribe to Paul Stamets\u2019 view of the mushroom. Stamets, a mycologist with four decades of experience, is the founder and president of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fungi.com\/home.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fungi Perfecti<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Southern New England Mushroom Hunting offers lecture\/slideshow classes, guided walks, cooking demonstrations and private lessons. The couple routinely gives presentations at public libraries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGourmet Mushrooms of Rhode Island\u201d is loaded with mushroom photographs, pages of information about the edible and inedible varieties and 12 months of 2015. Bouchard wrote the text and took most of the photos, with Schmidt providing the rest.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"thumb-image loaded alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/546d61b5e4b049f0b10b95c5\/t\/54c24c62e4b0badc939eab7f\/1422019682893\/mushroomhunters2.jpg?format=300w\" alt=\"Emily Schmidt with an orange-and-yellow sun fungus. You don\u2019t want to upset the balance of nature, and you want to be careful when picking to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bouchard said a person can making a living picking wild mushrooms in Maine and on the West Coast, but for most southern New England hunters, such as Schmidt and himself, it\u2019s more of a hobby.<\/p>\n<p>Both Bouchard and Schmidt said chicken of the woods, hen of the woods, lion\u2019s mane and black trumpets are the choicest wild mushroom varieties they have discovered.<\/p>\n<p>They warn prospective hunters to be prepared for funny looks from hikers, dog walkers and joggers when they\u2019re out searching for wild mushrooms.
