{"id":1328,"date":"2023-03-15T14:49:58","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T14:49:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/?p=1328"},"modified":"2023-05-01T07:17:06","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T07:17:06","slug":"giga-bolete","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/index.php\/2023\/03\/15\/giga-bolete\/","title":{"rendered":"Giga-Bolete"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On rare occasions, you might come across an absolute monster of a bolete.\u00a0 Ever seen one?<br \/>Now you have!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"811\" src=\"https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DSC00546croptFIXED-smaller-file-1024x811.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DSC00546croptFIXED-smaller-file-1024x811.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DSC00546croptFIXED-smaller-file-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DSC00546croptFIXED-smaller-file-768x608.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DSC00546croptFIXED-smaller-file-1536x1216.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DSC00546croptFIXED-smaller-file-2048x1622.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/mushroomhunting.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DSC00546croptFIXED-smaller-file-600x475.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Ryan Bouchard holding a truly monstrous find<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But what species am I holding here?&nbsp; Well, this mushroom, which we found in northern Connecticut, is from the bolete family;&nbsp;more specifically, it&#8217;s from genus&nbsp;<em>Tylopilus<\/em>.&nbsp; To be even more specific, the exact species of this mushroom is&nbsp;<em>Tylopilus rubrobrunneus.<\/em><br><br>And that&nbsp;species is known to grow&nbsp;big&#8211;we&#8217;ve seen other huge ones ourselves, and we&nbsp;also recalled hearing Connecticut naturalist Bolete Bill say that he too has found&nbsp;<em>rubrobrunneus<\/em>&nbsp;specimens of gargantuan proportions.&nbsp;&nbsp;This one, as we first approached it, looked like it was just a large stone from a nearby stone wall!<br><br>But it ain&#8217;t&nbsp;no Porcini.&nbsp; As exciting as it was to find this enormous&nbsp;shroom (especially while wearing a&nbsp;t-shirt from an archaic monster movie), I already knew that&nbsp;<em>T. rubrobrunneus<\/em>&nbsp;is bitter&#8211;and I don&#8217;t mean like grapefruit.&nbsp; I mean atrociously bitter, to the point of being inedible.&nbsp; It&#8217;s not the only bitter species; in fact&nbsp;<em>rubrobrunneus<\/em>&nbsp;is&nbsp;one of several bitter species just within the&nbsp;<em>Tylopilus<\/em>&nbsp;group.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t write the group&nbsp;off completely though, unless you want to be in the dark about the delicious Black Velvet Bolete (<em>Tylopilus alboater<\/em>).&nbsp; But that&#8217;s a story for another day.
